EV ZUG vs SC BERN – Bossard Arena – 20:00

Zug got off to an excellent start of the Final series and confirmed all the good things that they’ve been showing in the playoffs so far. The Bulls are like a steamroller with every intention to win this darn title! On Thursday night, after an understandable “adjustment period” during the first period due to the long break, Dan Tangnes’ boys were terrific!

WHAT WORKS

Performances

Zug keep on delivering impressive team performances! We think it’s safe to say that the Bulls are showing the best hockey of the league during the playoffs. It goes without saying that… Dan Tangnes’ troops only need to keep it up. It’s as simple as that.

WHAT CAN IMPROVE

Face-offs

It’s hard to say what can really improve… during game-1 in Bern, however, the Bulls lost way too many face-offs. This is evidenced by the fact that they won only 45.6% of face-offs in Bern on Thursday night. As we like to say, face-offs are potentially a pivotal play in ice hockey. Even more so at the key moments of the games when the games are tight.

THE KEY PLAYER

Dan Tangnes (Coach)

Dan Tangnes never ceases to amaze and he proves to be an excellent and modern coach! Moreover, after game-1 on Thursday night, he did not hesitate to complain about “his” Garrett Roe’s unsportsmanlike conduct. We mean, what a great and fair guy!

Bern lost the first game of the series… just like it happened against Genève Servette at the quarterfinals stage and against Bienne at the semifinals stage. Yet, you can’t write the Bears off… never. Kari Jalonen’s troops delivered a good performance during the first period of game-1… then, a little bit surprisingly, the players lost their nerves. Tonight, however, there is immediately the chance to get back up.

WHAT WORKS

Playoffs’ away record

Bern played 6 away games overall against Genève Servette and Bienne… and they lost only one at the Tissot Arena! The Bears therefore felt pretty comfortable when they played on the road. 16 goals scored, 10 goals against. The whole, even though they shot 182 times and had to face as many as 255 shots. We mean, Jalonen’s guys proved accurate and merciless away from home.

WHAT CAN IMPROVE

Consistency

Bern haven’t been consistent enough in the playoffs so far. Both from game to game and also over the arc of the 60 minutes of a single game. We had yet another confirmation on Thursday night when, after a good first period, the Bears have been almost outplayed by Zug for the rest of the game. Consistency is crucial during playoffs… and it’s even more crucial in a final. Particularly if you have to face a strong opponent like Zug.

THE KEY PLAYER

Tristan Scherwey

Tristan Scherwey’s performance during game-1 was probably not top notch… but he brought in a lot of energy like usual and overall he’s having some terrific 2019 playoffs. We expect that tonight his personality and his being a bit of an “agitator” can help the team a lot.
