MotoGP: Aprilia Quietly Confirms Three Major Innovations

In Alcañiz last week, Aprilia made a low-key but significant announcement: the unveiling of a substantially revamped version of its RS-GP motorcycle during a private testing session. The focus is clear—addressing the motorcycle’s weaknesses, particularly during time attack sessions, where Marco Bezzecchi has been struggling to tap into the full potential offered by the Italian prototype. Under the guidance of technical director Fabiano Sterlacchini and project leader Marco De Luca, a fresh technical package has emerged. “Our primary focus was Marco’s time attack performance, and we’ve implemented numerous changes in various areas,” shared team manager Paolo Bonora.

A Redesigned Fairing for Enhanced Confidence

One of the first noticeable changes is the front fairing. The angular lines are gone, replaced with a smoother aerodynamic design that features a prominent curved wing in front of the air intake. This aerodynamic study has also led to the integration of complex profile flaps, which can adjust the motorcycle’s behavior based on its lean angle. The sides of the RS-GP have also been updated, incorporating elements that channel air downward—contrary to Ducati’s method. Unlike previous designs aimed at maximizing downforce or reducing drag, this aerodynamic overhaul is focused on boosting stability as the bike enters corners, a persistent vulnerability for Aprilia.

New Exhaust and Height Adjuster Greeted Positively

Two additional innovations received an enthusiastic reception. First, an updated exhaust system that, according to Bonora, “creates a more harmonious response from the engine.” Second is a height adjuster, tested during a simulated start by Bezzecchi, which was developed by test rider Lorenzo Savadori to enhance launch performance, which has been subpar until now. “From the very first feedback, it was something positive,” Bonora beamed. “We still need to test it with all our Aprilia riders, but it looks promising.” These tweaks could debut as early as the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.

Renewed Hope for the 2023 Season

Following a lackluster first half of the season, the Noale brand is optimistic about reaping the rewards of its efforts soon. Having claimed victory at Silverstone, Marco Bezzecchi could once again find himself on the podium with this enhanced version of the RS-GP. For Aprilia, the time is ripe to cement its competitive stature in the MotoGP universe.

Key Changes Summarized

In summary, Aprilia has discreetly approved three essential modifications during a private test: a new fairing, revised exhaust, and a height adjuster. The clear objective is to improve stability and efficiency during qualifying sessions. These modifications stand a strong chance of making a significant impact starting at Mugello.
