The final MotoGP Grand Prix of the season was originally scheduled to take place in Valencia, but devastating floods unfortunately forced the cancellation of the event in that Spanish city. Ultimately, it was Barcelona that stepped in to host the last race of the season, where Jorge Martín emerged victorious, capturing his first world championship title, edging out Francesco Bagnaia. Despite the shift in venue, the MotoGP community remained deeply aware of the victims affected by the floods in Valencia. Fundraising efforts had been organized, both live during the race weekend and online, to support those in need. As these fundraising initiatives concluded, MotoGP released an impressive statement detailing the total funds raised.
A Remarkable Contribution to Valencia’s Recovery
“The MotoGP community has come together to contribute a remarkable total of 1.6 million euros to the Racing for Valencia support fund! This amount represents the culmination of various fundraising initiatives held in conjunction with the Motul Grand Prix of Solidarity in Barcelona as well as online donations initiated during our campaign. Additionally, a final contribution of one million euros was made by Dorna Sports, the rights holder of the MotoGP. Thanks to the dedication of MotoGP fans, both online and on-site auctions featuring unique items and experiences helped raise over 300,000 euros, driven by the generosity of riders, teams, and partners donating auction items. Through their association IRTA, teams also provided a significant donation of 100,000 euros to our Caixabank fund. The Barcelona Chamber of Commerce further contributed 50,000 euros, propelling us closer to our impressive total. Fans attending the sold-out GP of Solidarity and those watching from around the globe also played an essential role through ticket sales, t-shirt purchases, and other merchandise. This collective effort put into motion by the MotoGP rights holder, Dorna Sports, truly embodies the spirit of solidarity in our community. (…) The event has also been honored as the best GP of 2024, celebrating the hard work of the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit. The entire amount of 1.6 million euros generated from our MotoGP initiatives will be dedicated to restoring the areas surrounding the Ricardo Tormo circuit, specifically Cheste and Chiva.
A Community United in Compassion
This initiative clearly showcases how the world of MotoGP—including organizers, riders, and fans—rallies together in times of need. The passion and commitment to helping those affected by the Valencia floods illustrate an unparalleled spirit of community. It’s a reminder of the potential for sports to unite people, transcending the racetrack to make an impact that resonates far beyond the finish line.
Looking Ahead to a Brighter Future
MotoGP is set on a path of recovery and renewal, not only for the sport but also for the local communities affected by the floods. As the next season unfolds, the collaborative efforts of every member of the MotoGP family will be pivotal in rebuilding and creating a hopeful future for those in need. The collective strength of this community in response to adversity reflects the true essence of motorsport: resilience, camaraderie, and hope.
In Summary
While the final MotoGP Grand Prix of the season may have shifted from Valencia to Barcelona due to natural disasters, the sense of solidarity among the MotoGP community remains stronger than ever. With Jorge Martín crowned as the world champion, it’s also a time for reflection on the power of community and the generous spirit of racing fans, riders, and teams alike—together, they are driving change and support for Valencia’s recovery.
