The increasing popularity of Formula 1 has led to an unprecedented demand for a dedicated Grand Prix event. Numerous countries are eager to organize a race, and South Africa, where the last Grand Prix took place in 1993, claims to be ‘one step closer’ to hosting a race at the historic Kyalami circuit.

Kyalami’s Quest for FIA Approval

The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has initiated the process to obtain Formula 1 accreditation. .comy by meeting the stringent FIA standards can a circuit be considered for hosting its own Grand Prix. Historically, the Formula 1 circus has visited Kyalami twenty times, with the track, located near Johannesburg, serving as a premier venue for South African Grand Prix events. Since the last race in 1993, however, Formula 1 has not returned to the African continent.

Revived Interest in an African Grand Prix

In recent years, Formula 1 has displayed a renewed interest in the possibility of a comeback to South Africa. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton asserted back in August that it is time for the sport to “stop ignoring” the African continent. A shortage of suitable racetracks has previously impeded all efforts thus far. Consequently, Kyalami has partnered with the British firm Apex Circuit Design to ensure compliance with the stringent requirements going forward.

Long-standing Advocacy for a South African GP

Advocacy for a Grand Prix in South Africa has been ongoing for quite some time. The management at Kyalami is viewing this collaboration with the British company as “a step closer” to realizing an official return. “With its rich heritage in Formula 1, Kyalami stands out as an ideal location for organizing international top-tier events in the future,” a spokesperson stated. “Both Kyalami and Apex Circuit Design share the commitment to provide an engaging experience for both fans and participants. While negotiations with Liberty Media continue relentlessly, South African enthusiasts can trust that a suitable track for Formula 1 is on the horizon.”

Drivers Weigh In on Racing in Africa

As preparations for the São Paulo Grand Prix were underway, Max Verstappen was also asked about the potential for a race in Africa. Alongside South Africa, Rwanda has been actively working toward establishing its own Grand Prix. Significantly, this year’s FIA Awards ceremony will be held in the Rwandan capital, Kigali. “I would love to see races on every continent,” responded the Dutch driver. “So, it would be fantastic if we could finally race in Africa.”

As the demand for more diverse locations grows within the Formula 1 community, the prospect of returning to Africa is not .comy exciting for fans but could also provide new opportunities for the sport within emerging markets. The collaboration and efforts being made at Kyalami could open the door to a thrilling new chapter for motorsport on the African continent.
