Rocco Coronel’s Exciting Motorsport Debut

Rocco Coronel, the son of renowned race car driver and Formula 1 analyst Tom Coronel, is set to make his much-anticipated debut in motorsport this weekend at the iconic Silverstone Circuit. At just 14 years old, Rocco has transitioned from a successful karting career to compete in the Ginetta Junior Winter Series, where he will be driving a genuine race car for the first time. Recently, he was also selected for the junior program of Red Bull Racing. “I am incredibly excited about this opportunity,” he expressed.

A Special Milestone in Racing

In an official press release, Rocco shared his thoughts about racing for the first time, stating, “This marks a significant moment for me.” With zero prior experience in car racing, he isn’t placing high expectations on himself. “I ma.comy aim to learn as much as possible and gain valuable experience. Of course, I’ll always strive for first place, but I understand that might not be realistic during my initial races. I just want to enjoy the experience and see how things unfold.”

Ginetta G40: A Unique Racing Experience

Although Rocco just celebrated his 14th birthday, he is diving into the world of professional motorsport with the Ginetta series. This racing class features the Ginetta G40 car, which includes a tubular chassis, an FIA-approved roll cage, and a fiberglass body. Powered by a 1.8-liter Ford Zetec engine with 100 horsepower, these cars serve as an excellent entry point for aspiring drivers. Tom Coronel praised the Ginetta racing series, saying, “It is a fantastic learning environment. The races take place on classic English tracks, which are truly ‘old school.’ The cars are equipped with street tires and a differential, aiding new drivers in mastering cornering techniques. It’s somewhat akin to a Formula Ford but with a roof.”

Joining the R Racing Team

Rocco will be racing alongside talented Swedish driver Scott Lindblom at R Racing. Lindblom is also a promising prospect from the Red Bull development program. Nathan Read, the team principal of R Racing, expressed his enthusiasm about being part of such a prestigious program, noting, “The fact that these drivers are using Ginetta as a stepping stone from karting solidifies its position as the leading junior class in Europe. The G40s look fantastic, and we can’t wait to get started.” The G40s driven by R Racing will showcase the prominent Red Bull colors in the upcoming season.

“The car is incredibly fun to drive,” Rocco commented. “With street tires providing minimal grip and a 100-horsepower engine that may not seem thrilling, the car’s lightweight design enables it to move quite quickly. It’s all about maintaining a clean driving style and executing precise lines. I’m eagerly looking forward to getting behind the wheel.”

During the Silverstone event, three races are scheduled, with race times set for Saturday at 12:28 PM and 3:48 PM, and Sunday at 11:48 AM (local times). Motorsport fans can catch all the excitement live through the BRSCC’s YouTube channel.
