Jos Verstappen has expressed his surprise at the two ten-second penalties that his son, Max Verstappen, received during the Mexico Grand Prix. Competing fiercely against Lando Norris, Max was found by race stewards to have crossed the line while defending his second position. Following the race, Senior Verstappen pointed out that not all stewards are entirely impartial towards Max.
Concerns About Steward Fairness
The controversy arose after a previous race in Austin, where Lando Norris received a time penalty for overtaking off the track. In contrast, it was Max who faced reprimands in Mexico City, leading to an extended pit stop that lasted an additional twenty seconds. Jos Verstappen admitted in an interview with De Telegraaf that his son’s maneuvers might have been “perhaps a bit excessive,” but he also suspected that some stewards harbor biases against Max.
The Reality of Competition
“There is much speculation about this issue, but ultimately, it doesn’t change anything,” Jos Verstappen elaborated. “Max will continue driving his own way. He has to, considering the car isn’t quite competitive right now. He’s fully committed to winning the championship and will not alter his driving style simply because a few stewards may not favor him.” In his statement, Verstappen Senior cited former British driver Johnny Herbert and Tim Mayer, whose father Teddy played a significant role in McLaren’s debut in Formula 1.
Selection of Stewards Under Scrutiny
“The FIA needs to review the selection process for stewards thoroughly,” Jos added. “It’s vital to question the backgrounds of those appointed and whether there are conflicts of interest involved, particularly with former drivers who may show bias towards specific racers or teams.” Despite these concerns, Verstappen Senior believes the underwhelming performance of the Red Bull team poses a more significant issue. In Mexico City, he lamented the lackluster performance of the RB20, stating, “You could see it reflected in his teammate’s results as well,” he concluded. “Even the Haas team was faster.”
Fan Reactions .comine
The .comine motorsport community has echoed similar sentiments, with many fans questioning how Tim Mayer and Johnny Herbert are allowed to serve as stewards. “How can drivers trust a system where FIA appoints stewards with clear biases?” one fan tweeted on X. Another user responded, “This is why Max mentioned he has the wrong passport,” referring to remarks the Dutch driver made prior to the race weekend, suggesting he feels out of place among the predominantly British Formula 1 media landscape.
