FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s Ongoing Struggles for Recognition

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the FIA, has expressed a belief that the organization may never receive the acclaim it rightfully deserves. Recent controversies have once again thrust the FIA into the limelight, particularly due to the stringent measures taken against drivers for their inappropriate language. Notably, top driver Max Verstappen was previously subjected to a community service mandate, while seasoned rally competitor Sébastien Ogier faced a hefty fine of €30,000 for similar offenses.

The Role of the FIA in Motorsport Growth

In a recent interview with Autosport, Ben Sulayem conveyed that the FIA is due for increased recognition for its vital role in enhancing interest in motorsport, specifically in Formula 1. He stated, “Over the years, the FIA has played a significant part in the rising interest around racing. It’s quite frustrating that others have profited while the FIA has not seen its fair share.” Ben Sulayem lamented the situation, emphasizing, “It feels like everyone else gets to take the accolades while we’re overlooked.”

Investment and Contributions to Motorsport

Since his inauguration in 2021, the Arab leader highlighted his substantial investments in various aspects of auto racing, contending that he seldom receives the credit for those efforts. “Upon taking charge, we incurred €20 million in operational costs,” he revealed, indicating the financial commitment the FIA has made. He acknowledged the significant contributions of external entities like Liberty Media, which owns Formula 1. “Their work has undeniably boosted Formula 1’s profile, and I wouldn’t change a thing about that. However, people need to recognize that the FIA has been instrumental in that journey as well,” he added.

The Complexity of Governance in Motorsport

Ben Sulayem elaborated that while Liberty Media performs admirably in promoting the sport, “the regulations and governance remain our obligation.” He emphasized the critical nature of these aspects in ensuring that every participant in the racing world can enjoy their activities safely and profitably. “We aim to provide drivers with enjoyable and safe racing experiences while also enabling them to earn a living. Unfortunately, it appears that we will always be the ones facing frustration and criticism,” Ben Sulayem remarked.

This discussion raises essential questions about the recognition and respect afforded to governing bodies in motorsport. As the FIA continues its journey, the dialogue surrounding the organization’s contributions will remain a crucial part of its narrative in the world of racing.
