Deploy Folding Table of contents
To promote the collaboration between the LEGO® Group and McLaren in a distinctive manner, the toy manufacturer came up with an extraordinary concept. “Let’s reconstruct our LEGO McLaren P1™ model in full scale and take it for a spin around the Silverstone circuit… with Lando Norris behind the wheel!”
This proposal caught the design team’s attention at the LEGO Group. Although they had successfully recreated the Bugatti Chiron in full size for a previous project, this venture was a different challenge altogether, according to Lubor Zelinka, the design manager who has been with the renowned Danish company for the past decade. The Czech native is part of a diverse team of 23 designers, engineers, and model makers who transform the marketing department’s innovative ideas into reality.
Exploring the Challenges of the McLaren Project
The significant difference between this project and the Bugatti project? “This is the first LEGO model that can navigate turns, complete laps on a real race track, all while being driven by a Formula 1 driver.” According to Zelinka, the McLaren endeavor represented a major leap forward in many respects compared to previous projects his team had taken on. “We have truly raised the bar when it comes to what is achievable with LEGO Technics. This is the most advanced drivable LEGO car we have ever constructed, and it was completed at an astonishing pace. We wrapped it up in just seven months!”
An Incredible Partnership Between LEGO and McLaren
McLaren was equally enthusiastic about collaborating on this project, granting the LEGO Group access to their resources and maintaining extensive communication with the engineers based in Woking. The synergy between the two companies was palpable as they worked closely to ensure that every detail was meticulously crafted. From the design phase to the final touches, the project sought to embody both the thrill of motorsport and the playful spirit of LEGO, captivating fans of all ages.
