ZSC Lions vs SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers 5-4 (SO)

The ZSC Lions earned a 5-4 shootout home win against Rapperswil at the end of a quite eventful and funny game!

We think both teams can be satisfied after this one.

Rappi can be satisfied because the point earned at the Hallenstadion. During the surreal early stages of the game, it took them only 107 seconds to take a 3-goals lead thanks to Roman Cervenka (who scored twice) and Frantisek Rehak. But, most and above all, Jeff Tomlinson’s guys delivered overall a very good team performance against the current league leaders and best team of the league.

It wasn’t impossibe to think that the game was over when there were still 58 minutes and 58 seconds to play against the most in-form team of the league.

The ZSC Lions for their part can be satisfied because, after that surreal beginning, they reacted and were able to turn things around. Firstly, almost immediately after the third goal conceded and after that Ortio replaced Flüeler, they scored their first goal of the night with Simon Bodenmann during a power-play opportunity… and then, already before the first break, they made it a brand new game with Roman Wick.

Then, after an overall balanced and tight goalless central period… Christian Marti and Phil Baltisberger turned the score around and put the hosts ahead! It could have been a huge blow for the visitors. Who, instead, didn’t panic and found the strength to score a tying goal with Casey Wellmann at 12 minutes to the end!

We think that overall both teams could have won this one. We think it’s safe to say that Rappi delivered a very good performance. But we also think it’s safe to say that, finally, the league leaders – who aren’t league leaders by accident – deserved the extra point thanks to the goals scored by Pius Suter, Roman Wick and Garrett Roe during the shootout series!

Joni Ortio

We don’t think you can really blame Lukas Flüeler and his very unlucky performance that lasted less than two minutes… but Joni Ortio was outstanding and made the difference also during shootouts.
