Starting from the 2006-07 season, each Regular Season game must have a winner. In other words, tie games were abolished.
But which teams have been the most effective so far in earning the extra point when the game was tie after 60 minutes of play? Let’s find out.
Let’s start by saying that, starting from the 2006-07 season, 769 games required an overtime period or the shootouts series. Now we have a look at the win % of games that moved to overtime or shootout.
WIN % – OT / SO
Kloten are the ones who won, in percentage, the highest number of Regular Season’s games that went into the overtime period or shootouts series. Paradoxically, however, the Airmen were relegated at the end of the 2017-18 season by suffering an overtime defeat against Rapperswil in the crucial game…
Davos follow close… and then, there are other 4 teams who won more than 50% of the games that moved to overtime or shootout. We’re talking about Lugano, Bern, Langnau and Fribourg Gottéron.
On the other hand, all the other National league teams have a lower than 50% rate of success.
It’s interesting to note that three of the four teams who won the title in the last 21 seasons – Davos, Lugano and Bern – are in the upper part of this table. Only the ZSC Lions, among the teams who won the title in the last 21 seasons, have a successful rate slightly below 50%. Is that an accident? Probably, yet… but it’s clear that these teams have something more when it comes to wininng mindset. And this makes the difference when it’s do-or-die time.
It’s surprising instead the successful rate of Langnau. It looks like the Tigers feel very comfortable when the games move to overtime or shootout.
Let’s have a look now at the table showing teams who’ve been playing the highest – and the lowest – number of games that moved to overtime or shootout starting from the 2006-07 season.
OT / SO Games – From 2006-07 to date
The ZSC Lions are the ones who played the highest number of games that moved to overtime or shootout. 149 times… 74 wins, 75 losses.
Genève Servette follow with 145 games… 71 wins, 74 losses.
But then guys, do you remember the first ever Regular Season game that ended with a shootout win? We searched for it and…
16.09.2007 / EHC Basel vs HC Fribourg Gottéron 2-1 (SO)
Basel, who won only 38.5% games that moved to overtime / shootout, went down in history as the first ever NLA team who earned a shootouts win. It happened on September 16th, 2007, when they hosted Fribourg Gottéron at the St.Jakob-Arena.
Basel took the lead with Astley assisted by Anger after 16 minutes and 25 seconds of play. Gottéron, however, were able to equalize – shorthanded! – shortly before the half-an-hour mark with Botter assisted by Neuenschwander. The score didn’t change until the 65th minute of play… when Basel earned a shootouts win thanks to Daniele Manzato’s saves and Astley and Anger’s goals!

Well, we mean… that game, one way or another, made history.
Right now in fact, we can’t imagine to go back to prior the 2006-07 season when draws were accepted as a final score. Ice hockey is like that, anyway… you either win or lose. We love it also because of this factor 🙂
