The 2018-19 season is over. Thanky you all very much! Thanks to the teams, who gifted us with yet another exciting season. Thanks to you, who are following us more and more. And thanks also to us, come on… we’re trying our best to offer you a different and personal blog 🙂

When a season is over, there is always the feeling of melancholy. September looks so far away… but when a season is over, it’s also time for weighing things up. And it’s time for “our” oscars… Therefore, let’s see our 2018-19 National League’s oscars!

There are no particular criteria. We just wanted to reward those players and teams who – for a reason or another – deserve a mention.

NATIONAL LEAGUE 2018-19 OSCARS

THE OSCAR FOR… “SIMPLY THE BEST”… GOES TO

Nominee: SC Berna

SC Bern

Congratulations to SC Bern, the 2019 Swiss Champions! The Bears finished the Regular Season at the top of the table and then won the title. Point. Kari Jalonen’s troops probably didn’t play the most spectacular hockey… but in the end, they lifted the trophy and this is all that matters. Bern put some amazing character on display during playoffs. A character that always allowed them to get back up when they looked up against the wall. A character… worth the title!

THE OSCAR FOR… “MVP OF THE SEASON”… GOES TO

Nominees: Dominik Kubalik (HC Ambrì-Piotta), Leonardo Genoni (SC Bern), Dan Tangnes (Coach, EV Zug)

Dominik Kubalik

Dominik Kubalik… we wrote an article back mid-January titled: “Let’s enjoy him while we still can”. Well, unfortunately time’s up. From now on, they will enjoy him somewhere else. Dominik Kubalik is that kind of a player we rarely are lucky enough to admire in our league. He’s a real “sniper” and a player with an above average talent. The 23 years old Czech gifted us with some world class hockey for a season and three-quarters… Thank you, and good luck!

THE OSCAR FOR… “MVP OF THE PLAYOFFS”… GOES TO

Nominees: Garrett Roe (EV Zugo), Tristan Scherwey (SC Bern), Leonardo Genoni (SC Bern)

Leonardo Genoni

It’s a fact that if you want to win a title you need a top class goalie. Well, who better than Leonardo Genoni then?! Bern’s goalie may not always be at the top of his game during the Regular Season… but then, as soon as the playoffs start he turns into a wall in front of the net. The players of Genève Servette, Bienne and Zug are probably still dreaming about him at night. Leonardo is a goalie who can really help a team win a title. In fact, he’s our MVP of the 2019 playoffs!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST DIRECTOR”.. GOES TO

Nominees: Luca Cereda (HC Ambrì-Piotta), Heinz Ehlers (SCL Tigers), Dan Tangnes (EV Zug)

Heinz Ehlers

Dear god, it was very difficult to assign this oscar. All the three nominees had what it takes to win the oscar for “best director”. Finally though, we chose Heinz Ehlers, the most underestimated coach in Switzerland! Langnau were expected to battle with Rapperswil to avoid the bottom of the table position… and instead, the Tigers had a terrific season and made the playoffs for the first time since 2011. Heinz Ehlers played a huge role in that!

THE OSCAR FOR… “PAIN IN THE ASS”… GOES TO

Nominee: Tristan Scherwey (SC Bern), Johann Morant (EV Zug), Maxim Lapierre (HC Lugano)

Tristan Scherwey

Tristan Scherwey is like a pimple on the opponents’ ass… each coach wants him on his team. That’s because Tristan brings in a lot of energy and, also thanks to his winning mindset, he plays a key role in the team. Let us not forget, moreover, that he can even make it into the scoresheet at the key moments of the season. He seriously helped Bern during the 2019 playoffs. In fact, he’s always crucial during the post season. Probably that’s the reason why the fans of 11 out of 12 teams in the National League can’t stand him. But guys, have you seen the joy on his face at the end of the season? We love players like him!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR”… GOES TO

Nominee: EV Zug, EHC Biel-Bienne, SCL Tigers

EV Zug

Zug had an extraordinary season. In our opinions, the Bulls played the best and most spectacular hockey of the league. They even won the Swiss Cup. However, once again, they weren’t able to take that last step to win the title. We mean, they weren’t able to earn the right to be assigned the oscar for “best actor”. But the oscar for “best supporting actor” definitively goes to Zug!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST DRAMA”… GOES TO

Nominees: HC Davos, ZSC Lions, HC Lugano

ZSC Lions

Davos played the playout final. But we all knew that the season would be difficult for the Ibexes. Lugano haven’t won a single playoffs game. But ZĂĽrich’s history, in our opinoin deserves the “best motion picture drama” oscar… the Lions won the title only 12 months ago and were, on paper, one of the best teams around. Finally though, they even missed the playoffs… what about that for a drama!

THE OSCAR FOR… “FROM ZERO TO HERO”… GOES TO

Nominees: HC Ambrì-Piotta, Lausanne HC, SCL Tigers

Lausanne HC

Last season we assigned Lausanne the oscar for “fall from grace”… this season instead, we assign them the oscar “from zero to hero”! Last season, the Lions Vaudois missed the playoffs while the previous season had seemed like in the pipeline to become a big club. This season, even though sometime their claws not always came out, they were able to get back up and even to reach the semifinals for the first time in their history!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN”… GOES TO

Nominee: Winter Classic

SCL Tigers vs SC Bern

The game SCL Tigers vs SC Bern played at the Stade de Suisse in front of over 20’000 fans, surely  deserves the oscar for best production design! We’re generally against the things that are “so American”, but we’re into games played outdoor. In our opinion, outdoor games should involve more teams… as we wrote already in the past, we’d like to see an “open door Final Four” of the Swiss Cup. Best Production design would be a guarantee!

HONORARY JUVENILE AWARD

Nominees: EVZ Academy, EHC Biel-Bienne Spirit, Genève Servette U20

EVZ Academy

Zug are reinforcing themselves a lot in view of the next future. At the same time, however, the EVZ Academy is a precious gem that proves how the Bulls are working well. Already this season we had the chance to admire players such as Yannick Zehnder and Sven Leuenberger. Up next, there will be probably Luca Hollenstein who could be Leonardo Genoni’s back up next season. We mean, the EVZ Academy is a brillant project and a hotbed of talent!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST STUNTMAN”… GOES TO

Nominees: Genève Servette HC, HC Lugano

Genève Servette HC

There is no good action movie without a stuntman… the one who literally breaks his bones to make the film spectacular. In this regard, our thoughts go immediately to Genève Servette. The Eagles coached by Chris McSorley were heroic… they spent most of the time counting how many players were injured but in the end sold their lives dearly and finished their season with their heads held high. Yep, Genève Servette are officially our “Stuntman” of the National League!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST SHORT FILM”… GOES TO

Nominees: HC Fribourg Gottéron, SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, HC Davos

HC Frbourg Gottéron

Fribourg GottĂ©ron had a fantastic season! Until mid-November… the Dragons got off to a brillant start but then collapsed way too early. After that 10-3 home win earned against Langnau in fact, Mark French’s troops had too many ups and downs and finally missed the playoffs. But the first part of the season was great… a great short movie!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST FILM EDITING”… GOES TO

Nominees: Lausanne HC, EHC Biel-Bienne, SC Bern

EHC Biel-Bienne

Bienne built with a relatively low-budget a very competitive side. A side that gave its fans something to dream about! The Seeländers have been doing a terrific job since years and in the last two seasons they started to reap the rewards. Bienne are built in a very smart way… the roster is a mixture of high flyers, top class players and experience players. We mean, the “best film editing” goes to Bienne!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST MAKE UP AND HAIRSTYLING”… GOES TO

Nominees: SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, EV Zug

SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers

Rapperswil had a negative season. It was a real learning period that will come in hand next year. However, guys, it was a show to see so many fans dressed in red who fullfilled several times the away sectors to follow their team. They always supported their players and coloured with red the arenas around Switzerland many times. Our oscar for make up and hairstyling goes to Rappi’s fans!

THE OSCAR FOR… “BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY”… GOES TO

Nominees: SC Bern, HC Ambrì-Piotta

HC Ambrì-Piotta

The “Geyser Sound” of Jiri Novotny and his teammates goes down to this 2018-19 season’s history! The whole Valascia was involved in the end, and Ambrì-Piotta’s fans spent some very enjoyable moments with their heroes. That’s also sport. We have no doubts, the Leventinesi deserve the oscar for best original screenplay!

THE OSCAR FOR… “US”… GOES TO

Nominee: Leading Sport

Leading Sport

The oscar for “us” goes to… well, to us 🙂 Come on guys, we also deserve a small oscar, right? We have put our souls into this project to offer you a different and personal blog. We had to face several problems and went through several changes. We may not be perfect, but who really is perfect? We make mistakes and our opinions can be questionable. But we’re really trying!

See you soon, guys 🙂
